Introduction

The aim of this free, one-day Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) Workshop is to provide a forum for teachers of Pre-Calculus and Calculus courses at the college level.  Christinne von Renesse and Amy Ksir will facilitate this Inquiry Based Learning Workshop designed as a "hands-on" teaching and learning experience utilizing Inquiry Based Learning techniques to teach mathematics to students.  Calculus will be used as the case study for the IBL workshop.

Christine von Renesse uses open inquiry techniques in all of her teaching. Her passion for music and dancing has been woven into her teaching as part of her inquiry-based approach to mathematics for liberal arts classes, see www.artofmathematics.org. Christine has advanced degrees in Elementary Education and Mathematics from the Technical University Berlin, Germany and a Ph.D. in Computational Algebraic Geometry. She is now a full professor at Westfield State University and part of the leadership of New England IBL community. Christine is passionate about supporting faculty in reflecting on and adapting their teaching.

Tentative Schedule

8:30 am. REGISTRATION AND WELCOME Science and Engineering Building (SE-43), Room 215.

9:00 am.-10:30 am.     Experiencing Inquiry as a Student

The workshop facilitators will model teaching with inquiry. Afterwards, we will reflect on the experience and identify inquiry teacher moves.

11:00 am.-12:00 pm. Assessment Strategies Using Meta goals to frame our thinking, we will brainstorm different assessment tools and how they connect to teaching with inquiry in a calculus class.

12:00-1:30 pm.
Lunch at the Atlantic Dining Hall
        SPONSORED BY:      mcgrawhill

1:30 pm-3:00 pm Analyzing and Adapting Inquiry Materias In this session, we will look at several inquiry-based calculus activities and compare them. Then we will think about why and how we may adapt them.

3:30 pm.-5:00 pm. Facilitate Whole Class Discussions

Using activities from calculus, we will practice how to predict solutions and mistakes, and use them to sequence and facilitate a whole class discussion.
