Textbook: Introduction to Analysis

by

E. Gaughan

5th Edition, Brooks/Cole, 1998

Modern Analysis covers essentially the same topics as a Calculus I course, but the emphasis is on concepts, rigorous presentations and proofs. We plan to follow the textbook quite closely and try to cover Chapters 0-5, with Chapters 0, 1, 2 being done in Part A, Chapters 3, 4 and 5 in Part B.

Grading

You will receive a separate grade for Part A and for Part B, your grade for the course is the average of the two grades. The grade of part A will be based on homework (50%), short in class quizzes (30%), and a final exam (20%). The quizzes will be 10 to 30 minutes long and consist of one or more problems similar or identical to the homework. The quizz with the lowest grade will be dropped. Depending on the total number of quizzes, two more quizzes might be dropped. There will be no make-ups, students missing a quiz for any reason will get that quiz graded as 0. Quizzes may or may not be announced beforehand; be prepared to be surprised.

Grading rules for part B shall be announced soon. They probably won't differ radically from the rules for part A.

Exam Dates

For Part A: Monday, June 22, 1999.

For Part B: TBA.
