Calculus and Analytic Geometry II
Spring 2005
Welcome to my course Calculus II (MAC 2312, section 12768), we meet Monday and Wednesday, 6:00 - 7:50 p.m., in Physical Sciences PS 227. Pre-requisite for this course are Calculus I (MAC 2311) and Trigonometry (MAC 1114). The following information may be helpful for my students.Textbook Stewart, J., Calculus - Early Transcendentals Single Variable, Edition 5e, Thomson, 2003, ISBN 0-534-39330-6Objectives Applications of Integrals (Chapter 6): Apply integration methods to real world problems; calculate areas, volumes, work, average values.
Techniques of Integration (Chapter 7): Explore new methods for integration, in particular integration by parts, trigonometric substitution, and partial fraction decomposition; Calculate integrals for large classes of functions.
Further Applications (Chapter 8): Calculate arc lengths and surface areas; appreciate the role of integration in Physics, Engineering, Economics, and/or Biology.
Parametric Equations (Chapter 10): Define curves in the plane or in three dimensional space using parameters; visualize such curves; compute the equation of a tangent line; convert functions into polar coordinates; compute areas and arc lengths in polar coordinates.
Infinite Series (Chapter 11): Understand the concepts of sequences and series; estimate sums by using integrals, and integrals by using sums; decide about the convergence of a series by performing tests; develop a strategy for testing efficiently for convergence; represent functions as Taylor and Maclaurin series.
Methods
Homework: Assigned every week; many problems will come up on a quiz, on a midterm or on the final exam. Here is a list of current homework problems. Quizzes: There will be a quiz every Wednesday. All quizzes count for 1/3 of the grade. Extra Credit: Extra credit counting towards your quiz score can be obtained for assignments done on on a computer algebra system (of your choice, e. g. Maple, MuPAD, Scientific Workplace) Midterm exams: There will be two midterm exam, counting together for 1/3 of your grade. The first Midterm Exam has been on Wednesday, February 23, during class time. The second midterm is scheduled for Monday, April 11, during class time. Final exam: The final exam is comprehensive, it will count for 1/3 of your grade. It is scheduled for Sunday, May 1, 2005, 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. in GS 120 Tutorials Gao: Friday, 10-12 a.m. and 3-8 p.m.; Chang: Tuesday and Thursday, 9-12 a.m. and 4-5 p.m.; Mahanolobis: Monday through Thursday, 12-1 p.m. All tutorials take place in SE 201.
