Boca Raton, Florida 33431-0991Welcome to my Algebra class ! This is Modern Algebra MAS 4301, we meet Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:00 - 4:35 p.m. in PS 113. Modern Algebra (Summer 2003)
Topics
The objective of the course is to introduce into the algebraic theory of integers and polynomials. We will cover classical theory (prime factorization, Chinese remainder theorem, Fermat's little theorem), introduce abstract concepts like groups, algebras, modules, fields, and aim at applications like Coding Theory and Cryptography.
Textbook
Lindsay N. Childs, A Concrete Introduction to Higher Algebra, 2nd edition, Springer Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics, ISBN 0-387-94484-2. I would like to cover in particular the following sections.
The integers chapters: 2A-D; 3A-C; 4A-B; 5; 6; 8; 9. Groups chapters: 11A-C; 12A-B. The ring of polynomials chapters: 14, 15 in particular A,C,D, only if time permits: 18, 20. Finite fields chapter 28 in particular A,B. The RSA cryptosystem chapter 10B. Error Correcting codes chapter 13. Credit
