Textbook: Mathematics: A Discrete Introduction, by Edward R. Scheinerman (Brooks/Cole, 2000)

Course Outline

We will look at elementary topics in logic, set theory, counting, number theory, and graph theory. You will have to learn to express yourself on mathematical topics with some precision: know the definitions of the terms, be able to say exactly what is true and what is not, give simple examples showing that certain statements are not true, and perform appropriate calculations.

This is both an introductory course developing basic mathematical tools, and a first course in abstract thinking. We shall try to cover sections 1-22, 31-33, and 43-47 of the text.

Grading

There will be regular homework assignments, collected and graded, together counting 1/4 of the final grade.  There will be two in-class exams (each counting 1/4 of the final grade) and a cumulative final exam (counting 1/4 of the final grade), scheduled as follows.

Make-up exams will be given only under exceptional circumstances, and written, verifiable excuses must be provided.
