Ph.D. Preliminary Exams
After admission to candidacy, Ph.D. students must pass two preliminary exams in which they demonstrate an understanding of mathematics at an advanced level. The scope of these two exams is determined by the student's Ph.D. committee and requires approval by the departmental Graduate Committee. Typically, one preliminary exam will focus on a subject close to the student's area of research and the other on a complementary subject. The exams are administered by the entire supervisory committee. Each exam may be attempted at most two times. Both preliminary exams must be completed at least 3 months before the PhD defense.
