Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics
The doctoral program is for students who have a strong desire to perform
independent and original research in the mathematical sciences. To be accepted to
the program, the applicant must have a strong record of work in mathematics.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
A Bachelor's degree in Mathematics with
at least 3.0 GPA (or equivalent),
three letters of recommendation documenting the applicant's
prior work in mathematics focusing on preparation and suitability for success in graduate-level mathematics courses,
a verbal-plus-quantitative general GRE score of at least 1100, and approval of the departmental graduate committee.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS (effective Fall 2008):
[1] Completion of the following courses:
MAA 5228-5229 -- Introductory Analysis 1 and 2
MAS 5311-5312 -- Introductory Abstract Algebra 1 and 2
MAS 5145 -- Linear Algebra
MAA 5105 -- Multivariable Analysis
[2] Completion of the qualifying examination in analysis and
algebra. This examination must be successfully completed within two years of admission to
doctoral study. No part may be taken more than three times.
[3] The student must form a supervisory committee of at least four members including the
research advisor and at least two other members of the departmental graduate faculty.
Upon completion of [1]-[3], the student will be admitted to doctoral candidacy.
[4] Completion of a minimum of 80 credits including 6000-level (or higher) courses starting with at least four
of the prefixes MAA, MAD, MAP, MAS, MHF, MTG, and STA approved by the departmental
graduate committee. In addition two 6000-level courses of the same prefix must be taken in at
least two of the seven prefixes.
[5] Completion of a two-part preliminary examination covering specific areas of concentration and set by the student's supervisory committee with approval by the departmental graduate committee. Both preliminary exams must be completed at least 3 months before the PhD defense.
[6] Presentation and oral defense of a dissertation.
[7] Completion of all University requirements including at least 18 credits at FAU beyond the
master's level.
