math

Pursuing mathematics at FAU will help students solve scientific problems facing industry, technology, medicine, and society at large, as well as generate insights and new methodologies that can lead to breakthroughs in solving complex real world problems.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees in Mathematics prepare students to pursue careers in a variety of fields, such as data or systems analyst, actuarial science, statistician, teaching, as well as prepare for graduate degrees in mathematics, medical sciences, physics, and other related areas.

The Program

The B.S. and B.A. programs in mathematics offer an array of electives that provide an excellent background for a wide range of careers, in particular students go on to pursue careers as a systems analyst, data analyst, mathematics teacher, actuarial science, and statistician. Students interested in advanced or professional degrees, for example in the medical sciences, benefit from rigorous training in mathematics. The B.S. degree program is designed to prepare students for graduate work in mathematics and related areas.

Certificates

Two certificate programs are available, both in Statistics and Actuarial Science, as well as an Honors Program in Mathematics and two minors, one in Mathematics and one in Statistics.

Combined Bachelor's to Master's Degree

In addition, the department offers an accelerated five-year program leading to both the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Master of Science (M.S.) degrees. Students in this combined program take graduate credits in their senior year that count toward both degrees, and can earn a master's degree as quickly as one year.

Scholarships

The Department of Mathematics, College of Science, and Florida Atlantic offers a wide range of scholarship and award opportunities for undergraduate students in mathematics. General College of Science Scholarships include a number of scholarships based on financial need, diversity, or scholarly achievement, offered in both the fall and spring, as well as scholarships for graduating seniors in Palm Beach County Schools or transfer students from Palm Beach State College. The department offers a range of scholarships, including excellence-based awards for students with strong academic performance.

Opportunity

Students in the Department of Mathematical Sciences have the opportunity to connect with peers, faculty, and industry through a range of activities and initiatives offered in the department, college, and across the University.

A number of math student organizations offer a range of opportunities to connect with peers, listen to expert talks, and enhance leadership skills. Interact with faculty and fellow students at research days, colloquium talks, specialized groups such as Cryptography Cafe, as well as a number of mathematics conferences supported by the college.

Success

Students who graduate with a B.S. or B.A. in Mathematics from FAU pursue graduate studies in math and related fields, are employed by the organizations such as National Institute of Standards and Technology, TransUnion, Florida Crystals Corporation, and are teaching the next generation in educational institutions.
