Description: MAC 1105 is a fast-paced Algebra course designed to prepare students for university level courses using Mathematics, primarily the Calculus. Topics include systems of equations, rational exponents, radicals, and linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential and logarithmic functions. You should spend a
minimum of two hours per night on this course. Students intending to satisfy general education requirements in Mathematics should strongly consider taking MGF 1106 Mathematics for Liberal Arts I, MGF 1107 Mathematics for Liberal Arts II and/or an introductory statistics course. Note: The named course STA 2023 Introductory Statistics has a prerequisite of either MGF 1106, MGF 1107, or MAC 1105.
Textbook: Algebra and Trigonometry - by Michael Sullivan, Prentice Hall 8
th Edition 2008.
Prerequisites: Intermediate or High School Algebra.
Website: http://www.math.fau.edu/Pina/Edge/newsite.htm - Any important information pertaining to College Algebra is disseminated via our website. Each student must check the web site at least three times per week. Open computer labs are available throughout campus. As a consequence, ignorance of posted information is not a valid justification for missed or changed assignments, room changes, testing times, etc. Non-trivial questions can be sent to
mac1105@math.fau.edu
Lectures meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday and are the main presentation of the material in the course.
Lab Sections meet once a week on the day that you chose during registration. A quiz or bonus quiz may be administered when you attend your discussion/lab class. Your main resource person is your lab section leader. He/she is available during his/her tutoring/office hours in the Math Tutorial Lab (PS 112) to help you. It is required that you check with your lab section leader periodically to verify that any quiz, lab homework, or bonus quiz grades have been properly handled and recorded. If there is a problem concerning your lab section which you do not feel free to discuss with your lab leader, please contact Philip Pina, in the Science and Engineering Building, room 284.
Software: MyMathLab and MathXL This software will be used in the course for graded homework assignments and on-line quizzes. Assigned homework problems in MyMathLab can be completed in any
open lab on the Boca campus as well as the math department computer lab in SE 271 or you may complete the homework assignments at your home if you install the requisite software on your personal computer.
Course Grade: The course grade is based on the total number of points earned from MyMathLab homework (100 points), lab quizzes/hwk/attendance (100 points), exams (500 points), a comprehensive final exam (200 points), and other (100 points). Be certain that you agree with your total points and that your grade correctly reflects your scores in the course. Your grade is subject to being raised or lowered if there is a recording or computational error. Keep (make copies) all of your quizzes, homework assignments, and a copy of the exam question choices you selected for each exam!:

Homework--MyMathLab graded homework will be assigned within CourseCompass. Daily homework (non-graded) is listed on the course outline web page. The homework problems in the course outline represent the
minimum number of problems you should do in each section and should serve as a basis for your questions in lecture, the tutorial lab, or office hours. Additional graded homework may be assigned in lecture class and/or lab class. All graded homework assignments must be completed by the due date. Any changes will be announced in class and posted on the course web page.
Quizzes--Quizzes may be given in your lecture section and can cover any material included in a previous lecture's notes, homework, or reading/viewing assignments. Quizzing during lecture is at the discretion of your instructor. However, makeup quizzes will not be given. You should discuss each quiz within a week with your lecturer if there is a grading error or any other problem. Quizzes will not be reviewed at the end of the semester. Any lecture quiz will be counted in the calculation of a students grade at the discretion of the instructor.
Lab Quizzes (100 points): Quizzes will be given in your lab section and will usually be based on material covered in the MyMathLab homework. In addition, bonus quizzes may be given in the lab section. Makeup quizzes will not be given. You should discuss each quiz within a week with your discussion leader or lecturer if there is a grading error or any other problem. Quizzes will not be reviewed at the end of the semester.
MyMathLab Homework (100 points): MyMathLab homework must be completed by the posted due dates within coursecompass. Give yourself ample time to complete assignments well before the posted due date. Convenient lapses in internet access, faulty computers, power outages, or scheduled maintenances will not be accepted as valid excuses for missed or incomplete assignments. You have been warned!
Other (100 points): A total of 100 points counted toward a students grade can be at the descretion of your instructor. These points may be earned in the form of lecture quizzes, homework, projects, attendance points etc.
Exams (500 points): Five exams (90 minutes) will be taken in rooms to be assigned on the days and times stated in the course calendar. Each exam will count in a student's final grade with the possibility of a makeup exam replacing one of the exam scores. No exam grade will be dropped. Students are only allowed a number 2 pencil, eraser, a scantron answer sheet, and valid picture identification during a testing session. DO NOT BRING CELL PHONES, BOOKS, BOOK BAGS, NOTES, OR ANY OTHER ITEMS INTO AN EXAM ROOM! Entrance into an examination room requires a valid picture identification card. Only FAU Owl Cards, U.S. Passports, or Florida Driver's Licenses will be accepted!
Final Exam (200 points): All students must take the comprehensive final to receive a passing grade!
Makeup Policy: In general,
no makeups will be given for quizzes. However, one optional cummulative makeup exam may be given for exam 1 or 2 at or near the midpoint of the semester (check the calendar). At or near the end of the semester a second makeup examination (of your choice--to replace the corresponding regular exam 3, 4, 5) may be given (check the course calendar). The makeup examination can only help a student's grade. That is to say, the Makeup Exam X score will replace the Exam X score (only if Makeup Exam X is better than Exam X), where X is the exam that the student chooses to retake. Note however, that MAKEUP EXAMS ARE MULTIPLE CHOICE AND COMPREHENSIVE. No partial credit will be given on makeup exams.
Attendance Policy: A student may have at most 5 unexcused absences. Any student with a combined total of 6 or more unexcused absences will receive a grade of F. Roll will be taken in both lecture and discussion/lab sections. The total missed days (lecture + discussion/lab section) must be less than six. For example, Jill has missed 3 lecture days and 3 discussion/lab sessions. Jill receives a grade of F in the course.
Academic Honesty: Florida Atlantic University expects students to be honest in all of their University class work. Please remember that you committed yourself to academic honesty when you registered as a student here at FAU. The Department of Mathematical Sciences expects you to follow the academic guidelines as stated in the course catalog. Matters of violations of academic dishonesty are pursued to the fullest extent. DO NOT CHEAT!
