Math Circle for Middle School Teachers
July 28 – August 1, 2014
The Gold Coast Math Teachers’ Circle (GCMTC) at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) endeavors to support teachers learning, enhancing and sharing content knowledge and instructional practices that bring rich mathematical exploration into our schools.
We will facilitate a week-long summer workshop which will give teachers experience with and resources from some of the wealth of activities currently being led in many Math Teachers’ Circles nationally. We are continually looking to understand teachers’ needs, facilitate their interaction with mathematicians, and support their development as mathematics educators.
Math Teachers’ Circle Summer Workshop
The GCMTC at FAU Summer Workshop will support teachers in their development of problem solving skills as well as the incorporation of problem solving into their teaching curriculum. During the earlier part of the week, teachers will gain experience with a variety of problem solving techniques; subsequent sessions will focus on particular topics, such as geometry, sequences, counting, and number theory.
A major theme throughout the week will be finding creative answers to the question of how to incorporate a problem-solving approach into the existing curriculum. To this end leaders will supply participants with handouts or short modules based on the material covered during their sessions. They will also work with teachers to share ideas for enlivening any mathematics class and to develop lesson plans. Focused discussions will be held to determine what obstacles exist to incorporating this style of teaching in the present curriculum and what resources would be most helpful to teachers.
The summer workshop consists of daily sessions Monday through Friday, July 28 - August 1, 2014. The sessions will meet at Wyndham Deerfield Beach Resort, with daily meetings 9:00am - 6:00pm.
Evenings will be reserved for related, informal activities including further exploration of the day's problems and discussions of other mathematical fun and games, as well as free time to explore the area restaurants for dinner.
Accommodations will be provided at Wyndham Deerfield Beach Resort Hotel. This hotel features private rooms, wireless Internet, restaurants, pool, beach access, and other amenities. Lodging, breakfasts and lunches will be paid by the Gold Coast Math Teachers' Circle.
We are grateful to all of the sponsors for their support!
