We will begin with the following problem from the Math Counts booklet.
Math Counts # 181: What is the value of the sum 1 + 4 + 7 + 10 + ... + 91 + 94?

But we might not stop at 94. We might just keep on going, and going.

Then we will look at a number of similar sums, and try to understand why answering these questions was important.
The figure on the right is known as Pascal's Triangle. Blaise Pascal was a great mathematician and philosopher. He was born in France almost 400 years ago, and he used this triangle in several of his investigations, but he did not actually invent it. It is related to what we will be doing in this session, but not directly so. We will learn more about it as time goes on.
